SmartZap - Robotic ESD Gun Tester

  • A fully automated ESD gun tester with built-in automatic failure detection.

System-level ESD testing is defined by the IEC 61000-4-2 standard. This standard sets the fundamental requirements and provides guidance for test setup. While the standard assumes manual testing, it does not exclude automated testing using robots. SmartZap enhances the reproducibility of manual tests by allowing fine control over various detailed parameters.

Repeatability

The SmartZap robotic system approaches the EUT with precision based on pre-set parameters such as approach speed and angle, ensuring consistent discharges.

Accuracy and Reliability

Manual testing inherently suffers from variability. SmartZap delivers a higher number of pulses across more test points with smaller voltage increments, resulting in more reliable and reproducible test outcomes.

Documentation

Robotic testing allows current capture for every discharge. It also enables verification of the correlation between detected errors and extremely fast rising waveforms, while documenting test conditions at each point. From captured current waveforms, you can inspect issues such as product lifting, cable connections, or grounding conditions. As such, robotic testing serves as an “absolute reference,” useful for operator training and cross-lab comparison of test results.

Extensibility

SmartScan can be expanded with additional functions. For example, the system can automatically reset the DUT by pressing a reset button, perform field matting, or integrate additional immunity test capabilities.

Test Speed

The benefits of robotic testing grow with the number of products and tests. For instance, manually testing each pin of a multi-hundred-pin connector is labor-intensive. SmartZap delivers a level of accuracy and speed that far surpasses manual testing, significantly improving overall productivity.
